  • Opening Reception for Amy Ho: Bridge

Opening reception Tuesday, February 1st, 7-10pm

Bridge abstracts the everyday experience of driving. In this work, a video of driving across a bridge is projected on ten layers of scrim. With each layer of scrim we see a larger and larger image, thus showing us the space in which video projection exists. The exaggerated perspective of the bridge’s architecture pulls the viewer into the motion of driving. The mesmerizing quality of the passing architecture mimics the robotic, drone-like attitude we adopt when we drive. We are so used to the act of driving that our bodies pilot automatically while our minds wander into thought.

Amy M. Ho is an installation artist whose work deals with the physicality of experience and the meditative nature of the passage of time. Space represents the most immediate medium through which we experience the world, yet we often overlook our bodies’ sensitivity to space and motion. One’s personal and intimate experience of Amy’s work brings attention to the duality of our existence as physical and psychological beings. She is currently enrolled in the MFA Studio Art program at Mills College. Amy received her undergrad degree in Art Practice from UC Berkeley. In addition to her studio practice, Amy constructs costumes and other wearable sculpture in her spare time. For more information, please visit: http://www.amymho.com/.

  • Right Window Gallery at ATA: Matthew Gordon is “Posing as an Echo Tourist”

    November 7 – 28, 2010

    Opening: Sunday, November 7th, 4 – 8 p.m.

Right Window is pleased to present a new installation by San Francisco-based artist Matthew Gordon.Through e-mail correspondence with the artist, I learned that the exhibition takes its name from aconversation where Gordon misheard/misunderstood what was being said to him. He wrote the phrase down in a notebook, along with other phrases gathered in a similar manner, and stored it away for later use. Eventually it reappeared in a poem, but also as a locus of thought around which Gordon created a new body of visual work.

When I asked him to expound upon this idea of re-purposed text and ideas, Gordon responded via e-mail with the following:

    two plexiglass boxes-

    part almost then,

    part almost window,

    contain a prismatic relationship

where mystical smog transforms into an accidental newscasting technique-

    i watch my hands,

loosing a high stakes performance space,

    fill a field with guilt-

i am enchanted by a copy and its double.

    posing as an echo tourist,

    my little heart is broken

    by a tactical break-up spell

as the light shimmers on my invisible authors.

And I’m sure we all know what that means.
