What starts out like a stereotypical teen coming
of age film quickly gives way to a very layered gritty
film about contemporary students in an urban high
school inAmerica. Director Lemont Wheaton’s plot
twisting film bears witness to the inventiveness and
idealism of a young African American teacher and
her students. The film deals in a very truthful way the
difficulty and resiliency in recognizing and navigating
through gang violence, sexual molestation, domestic
violence that effect the students in this high school on
a daily basis. The film is a revelation.
