  • OTHER CINEMA: JOHN LAW: CACOPHONY + BURNING MAN + BLF +

An opportunity to honor and give a hand to THEE man who’s been the beating heart of the radical prank community in SF for over 4 decades! Mr. Law gets his due recognition in the Fine Art world with a major show planned for Pro Arts Gallery in June. But prep for that expansive exhibition will require a whole lotta money and time, so that John can collect his materials and ready them for the walls and screens–tho of course he’s not able to work his neon-signman jobs for next 4 months. So, come on, we’re calling in all his friends and fans to step up and get his career-retro into forward-gear. John himself opens the party with a visual review of his major activities: Suicide Club, Cacophony Society, Burning Man, Survival Research Labs, Head Trip, Urban Exploration, not to mention his neon installations for the Ferry Bldg., Hills Brothers Coffee, and Tribune Tower. After intermission, OC itself steps forward with the best of its rich documentation of local and national culture-jamming and intervention art.*$9-$20

  • Left Eye Cinema: ¡Las Sandinistas!

    $7-$10

The Immigrant Rights and International Solidarity Committee of the SF Democratic Socialists of America is presenting a screening and exclusive Q and A session with the film’s director of the award-winning documentary: ¡Las Sandinistas!.
This film shares the untold stories of women who shattered barriers to lead combat and social reform during Nicaragua’s 1979 Sandinista Revolution, and the ensuing US-backed Contra War, as these same women continue as leaders in the struggle against their current government’s suppression of democracy and women’s rights.

The film is centered around the personal stories of Dora Maria Téllez, the young medical student who became a major Sandinista General, and four of her revolutionary allies – Nicaraguan women who overcame traditional gender barriers and subverted stereotypes to lead rebel troops in battle and reshape their country with landmark social reform. ¡Las Sandinistas! exposes a watershed moment in history when thousands of women transformed society’s definition of womanhood and leadership before facing renewed marginalization by their male peers after the wars ended. Now, 35 years later, amidst staggering levels of gender violence in Nicaragua, these same women brave the streets once again to lead popular movements for equality and democracy.

The film’s director, Jenny Murray, will be present for a Q and A session directly after the film. Our discussion will touch up on the making of the film, the current political situation in Nicaragua, and well as how leftists movements both in the US and abroad confront misogyny within their own organizations.

  • The Unnamed Footage Festival Re-calibration Party

The Unnamed Footage Festival emerges from a dormant state to
announce that it will be returning to the Bay Area in 2019 to celebrate the most divisive subgenre of horror offer once more. Alonge with the two day program of the film festival at Balboa Theater, which will include more short films, new features, classics, and under-the-radar gems, the UFF staff did confirm the Calibration Party will take place at the Artists’ Television Access (ATA) in the Mission District. The party will kick off with a screening and an intimate conversation with a filmmaker, followed by a reception with complimentary wine & beer.

UFF programmers continue their search for new, old, and lost films that fall under the category of Found Footage Horror, Faux Documentary, or first person Point of View (POV) Cinema, even expanding the range to include Social Media Found Footage. “The stigma surrounding this subgenre is thicker than ever,” said the familiar UFF spokesperson. “With our second year, we aim to prove that there is a well of fascinating found footage horror films to be discovered. Fans and new converts will be very excited to see what we’ve dug up, and how it showcases the merit and creativity of this filmmaking style.”
