  • An evening with Mike Kuchar

    $7-$10

The vibrant, poetic and wild works of Mike Kuchar have inspired generations of filmmakers and artists with their wickedly perverse parodies of pop-culture and abundant creativity. From early 8 mm films made with his twin brother George Kuchar featuring friends from their Bronx neighborhood to the underground sci-fi extravaganza Sins of the Fleshapoids 1965, his films take the language of Hollywood and make it so ‘overblown it’s glorious’. In the 1990s Mike Kuchar embraced video with the same transformative passion that he brought to his early 8 mm films, and created a vast body of work ranging from delirious teleplays to recent digital fantasies, displaying a unique creative sensibility. Relishing the possibilities of the most minuscule budgets his films are radiant and lurid in equal measure, celebrating human creativity with an undiminished passion and humor for over 50 years.

Tonight’s program highlights 3 distinct cinematic styles for this unstoppable movie maker.

Purgatory Junction: A filthy movie about people in heat, shot in the hellish confines of New York apartments housing with serious antics.

Flowered Fancies: Poetry is visualized with unbridled abandonment and the complete lack of shame, it is perfumed perversity that stinks to high heaven.

Thoughts and Feeling: An internal landscape stained with toxic moods and potholes of guilt, but is very nice to look at.

  • Left Eye Cinema: Rompienda Puertas (Break & Enter)

    $7-$10

Join the San Francisco DSA and Left Cinema for a screening of Rompiendo Puertas (Break & Enter), a documentary about Operation Move In and the New York squatter’s movement in the 1970s. Facing increasing rents and forced relocation under “urban renewal” programs poor black and brown families in the city’s gentrifying Upper West Side decided to take matters into their own hands. Operation Move-In found housing for more than 300 families by seizing and squatting vacant apartments, many of them owned by the city and slated for demolition. With support of community groups, they repaired these structures and even managed to win the right to remain for many families through militant direct action. Shot by the radical Newsreel Collective in the summer of 1970, Rompiendo Puertas is a gripping portrait of the movement through the eyes of Dominican and Puerto Rican families fighting for their right to exist in a city that’s determined to deny them space. It is an eye-opening and important film with many parallels to the contemporary situation in San Francisco
