We’re super-thrilled to open our 2022 calendar with a visit from MISSION DISTRICT legend GUILLERMO GOMEZ-PENA and Tijuana-based underground filmmaker GUSTAVO VAZQUEZ!! World-renowned for his evocative performance collective La Pocha Nostra, maestro GUILLERMO and GUSTAVO grace us with some of their most recent art films! In the spirit of the times, and the ever-looming shadows darkening San Francisco for many, GOMEZ-PENA and VAZQUEZ present their recently-completed surrealistic “SF APOCALYPSE,” a “portrait of the creative city gone wrong,” along with “The Great Mojado Invasion!”

Tamara Chu is a digital artist and dancer from Daly City, CA
John Davis is a Northern California artist exploring the relationship between moving image and sound. Through live performance and studio-based projects, his work encourages sensory response through unexpected uses of traditional media.
Faults is the trio of Jorge Bachmann, Jaroba and Kevin Corcoran who improvise music for electronics, reeds and percussion. Based in San Francisco, they have performed and recorded their expansive sound of tonal and textural interplay in a columbarium, an abandoned munitions warehouse, a furniture store, a restaurant, a beach, and other makeshift venues while occasionally expanding to include other improvising musicians.
Originally hailing from Nagano, Japan, Nao Nakazawa moved to California in 1996 to study film. First earning a BA in film & digital media from UC Santa Cruz, and later a MFA in cinema from SF State University, Nao has spent more than 25 years working on film and television productions throughout San Francisco Bay Area and Japan as a director, producer, sound recordist, camera operator, and translator. Nao has been devoted to making his own films of many genres, such as documentaries, fictions and animations. For the past decade, he has been creating experimental works that feature live performances. Trained classically in music, Nao plays violin and mandolin and utilizes effectors and loopers to create a wide member of The Factors since their debut in 2013, actively recording and performing with them. Recently, Nao has been collaborating with play productions in Japan providing live music accompaniments.
On Monday, the Fourth of July, Other Cinema/ATA Gallery presents a very special music/film hybrid holiday event, a benefit for the cash-strapped Other Cinema project, just barely able to continue screening personal cinema after some 37 years. This festive fund-raiser features 3 San Fran art-rock bands, coupled with 3 16mm cult-cinema selections.Starting the party is the wild and watery electromagnetic waves of The Clog, and stepping into the spotlight later is not only the explosive synth attacks of Combo, but also the No Wave dance rhythms of Vivian Panache. The theme being “Smoke and Mirrors”, and the show being centered on the cross-media intercourse between music and film, then irresistible psychotronic sequences from legendary cinema anomalies will bridge between the musical performances. David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone drive to the climax of Paul Bartel‘s “Death Race 2000”, a Roger Corman black comedy that will hit the screen with the same impact as the live acts. And Ishiro Honda‘s “Gamera, the Invincible” will bring its kaiju monster-mash to the break between another pair of performances. The fusion of art-rockmusic and apocalyptic movies generates an eccentric cabaret vibe that calls for a performance-art presence that ATA is so famous for, here embodied in the form of local light Tommy Becker, popping up with his “Big Bang Mix”. And of course the entire mid-summer night will be enlivened with dazzling strobe lights throbbing through the delightful swirls from our smoke machines!Doors open at 7:30 for an 8PM showtime, a holiday-discount $7 admission charge. (All ages).
