ANALOGICA is a annual festival and a platform for the investigation and dissemination of analog practices in visual and sonic experiments based in Bolzano, South Tyrol. Italy. This special screening features a selection of films from the 2024 program:
Abgad Hawaz by Robin Riad

Learn how to pronounce the Arabic Alphabet in 28 easy steps! Direct animation, laser printing, and synthetic/animated sound. Robin Riad is an Egyptian-Canadian Toronto-based experimental filmmaker and animator. Robin works primarily with analog mediums, specifically 16mm and Super8. She experiments with different modes of processing and direct animation for her films. An avid filmmaker, she devotes her time to many local Toronto film organizations.
Ripple Effect by Niyaz Saghari

The diver plunges into the sea (death), but also into life (eternity), where he will rediscover the primordial waters of life. This quote from Pierre Lévêque about the illustrations in Tomb of the Diver resonated when I watched the viral video of a young man who was executed in Iran in 2020.Few days after his death, the grainy mobile video of him was released .He ran in slow motion and dived in a pool. I watched the wave of his hands, the kick of his foot and crossing the border between air and water just as he leaped beyond fear when he spoke the truth, transitioned from life and became eternal in people’s memory. Like an act of preservation, I filmed the video with a super 8 camera. The camera became a tool of magnifying and grieving. 3 years later, men and women still chant his name in protests. Like the waves after a dive, injustice has a ripple effect. Niyaz Saghari is a Bristol based filmmaker. Graduating from Film Directing from Art University of Tehran ( Iran), she continued her studies on the MA Animation at Newport. Besides following professional work in animation, she has been directing short documentaries and making experimental films.
War Zone by Dominic Angerame

In War Zone, Dominic Angerame revisits his personal experience (like no other) as artist-in residence, exploring a symbol that once stood for political, social and cultural divisions brought about and shaped by the Korean War, which are now more ambiguous, nuanced and multi-layered than ever. Filmed in the Korean Demilitarized Zone in 2005, War Zone
commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Korean Armistice Agreement, documenting Angerame’s unique take on the history, geopolitics and present-day of the DMZ, which emerges as a complex site that goes well beyond its borders. War Zone is one of Angerame’s most original and remarkable works to day, which offers an insider’s perspective on “No Man’s Land” and a rare glimpse into what life at one of the world’s most heavily fortified borders is like, revealing the intricate complexities of the area and capturing the tension that is still in the air.” — Kornelia Boczkowska, author of “Lost Highways, Embodied Travels: The Road Movie in American Experimental Film and Video. Dominic Angerame was the Executive Director for Canyon Cinema from 1980-2012. He has taught at several Universities in the Bay Area, as well at the University of Nevada/Reno. Having compiled a filmography of more than 50 16mm films most of which have been shown and won awards at numerous International Film Festivals. He continues to film with a Bolex and is also a film historian focusing on the Pre Beat and Beat Cinema of the 1940s and 1950s.

A poet intervenes in a radio program to dialogue with the singer Piero Ciampi. In the meantime, a girl contemplates a portion of the sea. Mattia Biondi is an italian independent filmmaker who works “at the end” of the images. His research is based on the use of minimal and essential technical instruments and it is oriented towards the development of creative processes concerning the fusion of archival material and autobiographical elements.
ULÍA by Laura Moreno Bueno

A collage constructed from the frame that proposes to unite different places from the distortions of space, enclosing different landscapes in the same frame. Creating non-existent but potentially real landscapes. Laura Moreno Bueno is interested in the transfiguration of audiovisual codes using digital or analogue media. She works with analog film and sound.
Diane (wrapped in plastic ) by Joanna Byrne, Mark Byrne

A super 8 hauntology. Reimagining a series of one-way conversations with the permanently off-camera Diane, foraged in fragments from the screen of a cathode ray TV – onto an expired Ektachrome 160 super 8 sound cartridge (best before 1990). The film was home-processed, then wrapped in plastic and buried in the woods. Diane…’ is a collaboration between the original source material, ourselves, the body of the film, and the earth it was buried in. The soundtrack was recorded directly onto the magnetic strip of the film, firstly in camera, secondly using a super 8 motorised editor, adding to the fragmentation and abstraction of the soundtrack (No additional digital editing has taken place). The film can be screened in its original form on a sound super 8mm projector, or as a digital video.
Joanna Byrne is a UK-based artist-filmmaker working with tactile, sustainable and collaborative approaches to film and moving image. She works with analogue film (super 8, 16mm) in a hands-on, tactile way: home-processing, editing by hand, and incorporating found footage, hand-manipulation and physical traces of her body into her work. Byrne is interested in the therapeutic and transformational potential of experimental film and expanded cinema practices.
Why i never became a driver by Yuula Benivolski

Three women engage with the medical system to confront strange dreams they cannot shake. Early one morning, I regained consciousness in a hospital bed as the sun was coming up. I was sixteen. The first thing I noticed was the breaking news on television: princess Diana had died in a car accident. Two hours earlier, I was hitchhiking home from a party with friends. We were picked up by a Toyota hatchback; the driver was drunk, but we were desperate. At the bottom of a twisted mountain road we crashed into the gate of my town’s cemetery. As I watched updates on Diana from my hospital bed, images of her smashed up car crept into my mind and imprinted as my own.
Yuula Benivolski (b. 1980, Moscow) is an artist and filmmaker in Toronto. She uses autofiction and personal archives to explore the territory between memory and official history. Most recently, her work has been shown at e-flux Screening Room in NYC; Istanbul International Experimental Film Festival, Interbay Cinema Society in Seattle, WA; DIFFUSION 2023 in Toronto; Beijing International Short Film Festival, and Images Festival in Toronto.

MÁS CABLES QUE PERSONAS plunges into the interior of the human body, through the combination of various animation techniques and supports. Computer-generated images of the body are repeated over cyanotypes and disintegrate at the mercy of artificial intelligence under a motto: being deliberately unreal is a sign of honestly.
Camila Dron (Argentina, 1999) is a graduate in Audiovisual Arts and programmer for the Festifreak festival. Currently, she explores alternative processes of photography and animation using cyanotype and artificial intelligence as her medium. Her most recent works, “La próxima te acompaño” and “Más cables que personas,” which have toured various
international festivals, aim to playfully expand the notion of the representations that technology provides us about the interior of our own bodies.

Analogica Selection 15, the new 2025 edition, will take place in Bolzano from November 12 to 16. Part of the selection will also be available for streaming on the Analogica website from December 15 to 21, 2025. The new call for entries for Analogica will open at the end of December.
