This durational performance will be accompanied by Woody Guthrie’s first commercial recording, ‘Dust Bowl Ballads’; an album considered to be one of the very first concept albums. The semi-autobiographical album chronicles Guthrie’s experience of economic, social, and soulful hardships of the Dust Bowl era. In its entirety the album is a tribute to every facet of the human condition; that no part of it is off bounds. Guthrie tells us like it is. A telling insightful quote Steinbeck wrote of Guthrie: “Harsh voiced and nasal, his guitar hanging like a tire iron on a rusty rim, there is nothing sweet about Woody, and there is nothing sweet about the songs he sings. But there is something more important for those who will listen. There is the will of the people to endure and fight against oppression. I think we call this the American spirit (Smithsonian Folkways)”
