Thursday, January 1, 1970, 12:00 am

Media Alliance, in collaboration with Modern Times Bookstore and Artists¹ Television Access, is proud to present MAZE 2002, our second annual Zine Expo and Book Arts Fair. The expo will feature exhibition tables for self-published comic artists, zinesters, and book artists along with panels and author readings. Tables will be set up at Artists¹ Television Access to exhibit, buy, sell, and trade self-published wares. Panels and readings will take place down the street at Modern Times Bookstore. MAZE 2002 aims to create greater communication and community between many different producers of independent media and artists, as well as help people share skills and information related to zines and zine culture.

We’ll also talk about the perks and pitfalls of increasing production value as well as strategies for holding onto your publication’s goals, visions, and values as you expand. Panelists include Dolores Garay of Shellac; Lisa Miya-Jervis, editor and publisher of Bitch magazine; Clint Johns of Tower Magazine; and independent publishing legend V. Vale of RE/Search Publishing.

A CARTOONIST EXTRAVAGANZA
Modern Times Bookstore
3pm

Readings by: Tom Ellsworth, Erika Lopez, and Bitter Pie. Take a break from tabling to come hear three bad-assed cartoonists read from their recent projects.

Tom Ellsworth is the illustrator of Soft Skull Press’s Snark, Inc., an illustrated “children’s” book for adults presented as a shadow puppet show. A dark twist to the children’s books you grew up with, Snark Inc. is a fun and full-color critique of consumerism and corporate control.

Erika Lopez, a former Simon & Schuster author, had it all and threw it all away. Now she’s cheerfully living her own never-been/has-been “where are they now?” life, returning to her childhood loves: stapling together books and tossing Cheerios at the wall. Come listen to her old-lady stories, and if you can afford it, buy cheap sweat shop shwag.

Bitter Pie has been broadcasting her self-published, comic-encoded messages of resistance to corporate control for ten not-your-bitch issues and counting. Come listen to “the somewhat listless adventures of charlotte” as this comic anti-heroine navigates her way through issues of class action, globalization, bike lanes, and pharmaceuticals.
