Reaching for the moonReaching for the Moon (Portuguese: Flores Raras) is a 2013 Brazilian biographical drama film. The film is based on the book Flores Raras e Banalíssimas (in English, Rare and Commonplace Flowers), by Carmem Lucia de Oliveira.

The film dramatizes the love story of the American poet Elizabeth Bishop and Brazilian architect Lota de Macedo Soares.[2] Set largely in Petrópolis between the years 1951 and 1967, the story coincides with the emergence of Bossa Nova and the development of Brazil’s capital, Brasilia. The film tells the story of Bishop’s passionate and often tumultuous life with Soares in Brazil.

  1. Claire Bain says:

This film introduced me to the poet Elizabeth Bishop and the architect Lota de Macedo Soares. It was refreshing to watch a love story about interesting, intense people, who happened to all be women and mostly in Brazil. And the dynamics of their relationship reflected those parameters, the gender intensity, the setting of a macho context and profession navigated by Lota de Macedo Soares, powerful and with an ego to sustain her massive drive. Same with Elizabeth Bishop. Possibly they had such success because they were, as lesbians, already outside of the norm, and able to forge ahead as an Other without restraint. The story depicted a web of emotional ties as delicate as the protagonists were strong.
