an evening with Hiss & Hum (im//perfect color) and Danilo Casti (bridge)

Sunday, May 4, 2014, 8:00 pm, $7-$10, ,

castiBRIDGE: An improv-based performance that runs around glitch, drone ambient music and sound scape sculpting with minimalistic visuals.
Danilo Casti (Sardinia island – Italy)
Bridge. Passage. Landscape. It’s a metaphor for the human innate curiosity towards knowledge. It’s an idea that connects two worlds. A man who crosses the bridge leaves behind a trail of melancholy, feeling the attraction to the newly discovered path. Close to each bridge there is always an interesting soundscape that gradually changes, fading the steps ahead to the traces of suspended memories. The bridge always tells two locations, weaving the space of memory to the flow of time. Duration: 30 min

“im//perfect color”Released exclusively on VHS and inspired by equal parts “New Wave Theatre” and Chris & Cosey’s “CTI Transmissions”, “im//perfect color” is the 4th full-length release from hiss & hum. Made using second-hand VCRs and obsolete (and often broken) video editors, the brittle, colorful, and slightly unstable visuals compliment the anxious melodies to make short abstract films that are, while immediately somewhat distressing, ultimately very calming and peaceful in their embrace of clutter, chaos, and color.  Two pieces from the release will be screened, as well as a live performance of a new work in progress titled “an easy mind (can suffer through all feeling).”

Hiss & Hum is the project of multi-instrumentalist Dave D’estroyer, perhaps best known in the bay area as the animated half of now-defunct sound terrorists Celine Dion (2013).  In addition to recording and performing in a wide range of other collaborative projects for the past decade, D’estroyer has been making home recordings that began as simple experiments in song form but have evolved into challenging soundscapes using heavily effected guitar & synthesizer.  His visual work began as abstract compliments to his more recent musical recordings, but he has also made videos for Clipd Beaks, Seven Lies About Girls, and RXCCXXNS which all share his rough editing technique and vivid psychedelic color scheme.
