Call for submissions: Magic Lantern at Children’s Fairyland

Children’s Fairyland seeks submissions of projected artworks for Magic Lantern, a one-night video exhibition event to take place on Friday, October 12, 2012. Submissions due August 31, 2012. Proceeds from this event will support Fairyland’s Outreach program. Curated by Mary Anne Kluth.

The very first projectors to make use of artificial imagery were called magic lanterns, developed in the 17th century. Like many new technologies throughout the ages, magic was often assumed to be involved in producing their mesmerizing effects. Fairyland is a historic story book theme park for young children, on the shores of Lake Merritt in Oakland, and is home to fantastical architecture, sculptures, and amusement rides. Magic Lantern will invite video and projection artists to make use of these site-specific features with works that respond to, or are recontextualized by, this particular setting. Of special interest are works that deal with bright colors, recreation and the outdoors, plants or animals, fantastical narratives, and concepts of fun and entertainment.
