On April 8th, 2002, there was a riot at Folsom State Prison. No inmates were critically injured, but a correctional officer sustained a serious spinal injury, and nine months later a captain who oversaw the riot committed suicide, apparently because of what he saw that day. To this day, the fallout from these events continues to rattle the hidden world of corrections.
“Code of Silence” refers to the unspoken rule in corrections that prison guards don’t inform on each other. But the three people profiled in this documentary, driven by grief and desperation, did just that. In highly publicized, dramatic testimony, whistleblowers testified about inappropriate favors granted to prison gangs and the unbearable stress of doing the right thing in the third largest correctional system in the world.
