Derek Jarman's Sebastiane

Sebastiane

Every third Wednesday of the month The Revival House presents the best in homo-grown cinema from decades past. Specializing in the unique, rare and obscure we screen long-forgotten Hollywood and Foreign flix, art-house hits, and erotic screen gems by filmmakers such as Derek Jarman, Bruce La Bruce, Fred Halsted, and Andy Warhol.

On Wednesday, May 21st, we present a landmark film by Derek Jarman and Paul Humfress – Sebastiane (U.K., 1976 – Latin with English subtitles) – a lushly homoerotic retelling of the story of Saint Sebastian with music by Brian Eno.  This is the original, uncensored version (softcore) – British Cert. X.

Sebastiane is a multil-layered, highly realistic and incredibly beautiful film for many reasons (not the least of which is the cast – naked or nearly so for the duration of the film)..

We are also presenting In The Shadow of the Sun (U.K. 1972/81) a collaborative project by Derek Jarman and Throbbing Gristle.  Conceived in 1972 as an ambiant film which could be enjoyed in much the same manner as ambiant music, Jarman created the film in 1972 with the soundtrack added in 1981 by the band Throbbing Gristle.  A 54-minute film with no beginning and no end, In The Shadow of the Sun will begin as background imagery at 7 and will re-screen immediately after Sebastiane.
