Liena Vayzmans photographs of a day shelter for the homeless on Chicago’s South Side speak of exile, transition, and constructions of home. The project includes color portraits and interviews with individuals about experiences with health care access, poverty, homelessness, and the criminal justice system, as well as photographs of the shelters spaces, food service, and human interactions. Shelter balances individuals’ unique stories with poignant photographic meditations on a space of transition. Vayzmans photographs reveal a striking connection between photographer and subject and a keenly observed sense of the overlooked details of daily life.
